Congratulations on the new member of your family! During this exciting time of stocking up on toys, food, and treats it is important to keep your pet’s health in mind. Your new pet may be due for a health exam, vaccines, deworming and more.
A new puppy or kitten needs to have a series of vaccines from the time they are 6-8 weeks old until they turn 14-16 weeks of age. These vaccinations are an important part of the health of your pet. Adult pets with no prior vaccines also will need a series of vaccinations.
New pets may also be carrying intestinal parasites which can be harmful to the pets or even the humans in your household. Bring a fecal sample with you to your appointment. We can test it for the presence of parasites and treat with the necessary dewormers.
If you are trying to decide whether or not you will spay or neuter your new pet there are a few things to consider. Do you plan to breed your pet? If so, is your pet a good candidate for breeding? This can include overall health, hip problems, hernias, and other genetic abnormalities that could be passed to offspring. Our veterinarians can assist you in determining if your pet is a good candidate for breeding.
If you decide to spay or neuter your pet Cloquet Animal Hospital is one of the only clinics in the Northland offering laser surgery. We typically recommend spaying/neutering around six months of age. When your pet comes in for the procedure he/she will be given a head-to-toe examination to include pre-anesthetic blood work screening. This will help us make sure your pet is healthy enough to undergo surgery. During surgery an experienced veterinarian performs the procedure while a knowledgeable technician monitors vital signs on state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. After the procedure your pet will be wrapped in blankets and monitored closely until they are awake.
Losing a pet can be a pet-owners worst nightmare. At Cloquet Animal Hospital we can implant a small microchip under your pet’s skin and register them in the Home-again database. Ask us more about this service at your pet’s first visit.
At Cloquet Animal Hospital we can teach you important tools such as how to trim your pet’s nails, clean their ears, and give tips for training your new pet. Call us today with questions or concerns and to set up your pet’s first doctor visit!
